Smarter Travel Workplaces Summer Newsletter

Dear Smarter Travel Workplace Coordinator
The evidence is bouncing off the walls – active lifestyles are happy and healthier. Walking or cycling, and even the use of public transport, as a means to get to/from work can be great ways of fitting those active 30 minutes into your day. But since increasing active travel in the workplace doesn’t happen by just thinking about it, this Summer Newsletter summarises some of the things you have already been getting involved in, and some of the things that we have planned that might be of interest.

Annual Seminar: Wellbeing through Active Travel

The annual Smarter Travel seminar 2016 was held on the 12th of May.

Wellbeing through active travel was the theme of the day: increasing evidence shows benefits to individuals and organisations that engage in active travel. Biddy O'Neill from the Department of Health opened the seminar, speaking from a national level about the Healthy Ireland initiative. Throughout the day speakers from workplaces and third levels shared practical examples of how they have been working to encourage and create supportive environments for staff and students.

Many thanks to all 80 attendees and to our panel of speakers from the Department of Health, Athlone Institute of Technology, the University of Limerick, St. Vincent's University Hospital, Cork County Council, Dublin City University, ESB and Google Ireland. Speaker presentations can be viewed here.

A European twist to this year's Cycle Challenge
Congratulations to all individuals and workplaces that took part!

Dublin and Limerick were two of the 52 European Cities that took part in European Cycle Challenge that ran during May. The Dublin prize giving ceremony was held in the NTA during bike week,16th June 2016 (click here to read more)

Sometimes it's the unremarkable things done often to support Active Travel in your workplace that make a difference.

And it's those same little achievable things, often more easily replicable, that can get you noticed for a Smarter Travel Award! The deadline has been extended to February 2017.
