What's the Weekly 'Virtual' Challenge?

Each week there will be a ‘virtual’ walk around the country, with prizes on offer!

In Week 1 we're walking from Dublin to Wexford, the home of the famous Wexford Strawberry! Our aim is to reach Wexford before midnight on Tuesday 17th Sept by clocking up a Team Average of at least 70,000 steps between now and then! All teams who reach the weekly targets will be entered into a prize draw each week for Pedometer Challenge goodies! To be included in these prize draws team captains must submit team steps online by 1pm on Wednesdays.

Team Photo Competition
Send a photo of your team to pedometerchallenge@smartertravelworkplaces.ie before Thursday 19th of September and be in with a chance to win a Pedometer Challenge Travel Mug and Fleece top for every member of your team! Photos can be as sensible or as fun as you like!

Researchers have recommended 10,000 steps (or approximately 5miles/8km) per day for overall good health and well-being. Calculate your average steps per day in Week 1 and aim to gradually increase that over the 4 week Challenge. Remember to start small and aim to build up your steps bit by bit. Every Little Helps, small changes like taking the stairs, getting off the bus/train a stop early, walking to the shops or on your lunch break can help you to reach this target in no time.

Will your Team Take the Team Pledge?

The Team Pledge Competition asks that teams commit to walking for at least 15 minutes of the journey to and from work, at least two days each week during the 4 week Challenge. Teams are asked to sign the Team Pledge at the start of the Challenge and at the end of the Challenge when you've completed the Pledge email it to pedometerchallenge@smartertravelworkplaces.ie and you will be entered into a prize draw for Pedometer Challenge memorabilia. Take the Pledge now!

FAQ
Q. Is the Challenge just about walking to work?

A. No – walking anywhere, anytime will count. Walking to, or part of the way to work is a great way to increase your steps and reduce your personal and environmental travel costs.

Q. Can I include other physical activity?

A. Yes, ANY ACTIVITY taken during the challenge CAN BE INCLUDED, for example, cycling, Pilates, aerobics, swimming and running. You can use the Activity Converter to estimate your steps for any activity where the pedometer will not work (e.g. cycling or swimming). You should NOT wear your pedometer AND take these extra steps. The conversion is only for times when the pedometer will NOT work.

Q. When is the leaderboard updated?

A. The Leader Board will be updated every week, with a mid-week update in week 2, 3 and 4. The first leaderboard will be live on Thursday 19th of September, you will be sent an email notification as soon as it's live. Read more...
