Marchathon

The Smarter Travel Campus programme run a national Walking Challenge, Marchathon annually in March. This challenge is open to staff and students of all Third Level Campuses who are partners of the Smarter Travel Campus programme. 

The Challenge aims to encourage staff and students to get up, get out and get walking for health, for the commute and for fun! Staff and students are asked to get into a team of 3-6 people (including the captain), register online at www.activetravellogger.ie and aim to increase their steps during the challenge, ideally aim to reach 10,000 steps per day by the end of the challenge. 

Teams are awarded for their improvement throughout the challenge. There are also lots of opportunities to win prizes throughout the challenge, including photo competitions, story competitions and weekly prize draws.

1,500 staff and students from 19 third level colleges all over the country took part in the 2017 Marchathon from the 1st to the 31st of March 2017. Together they clocked up 370 million steps during the month long challenge. Participants reported many benefits of taking part in the 2017 challenge, including:
– Enjoyed being part of a team (73%)
– Felt good about myself (56%)
– Increased activity (73%)
– Increased fitness (55%)
– Reduced stress (26%)
– Sense of community/belonging (41%)
– Made new friends on campus (12%)
– Weight loss (14%)

Prizes were awarded to participants reaching the top of the final leaderboard, for their improvement during the challenge and for sharing team photos, motivational video clips and stories and for being inspirational team captains and team members.
