Meet The Team
Arlene has been involved with the Smarter Travel Workplaces programme since 2008, first as a Travel Planner/ Facilitator on the Dublin Transportation Office programme One Small Step. This programme became the national workplace and travel plan programmes, Smarter Travel Workplaces and Smarter Travel Campus, which Arlene coordinates.
Arlene was one of the original team developing the Green-Schools Travel theme, which went on to become the national programme of implementation of school travel plans. Arlene continues to work with the Green-Schools Travel implementers, An Taisce’s Environmental Education Unit, in her role in the NTA.
Arlene has a BA in Communications from Dublin City University, a Diploma in Marketing, Advertising and PR from Dublin Business School, and a Masters in Sustainable Development from Dublin Institute of Technology. Arlene is one of the co-founders of the Sustainability Professionals Ireland (SPI) forum and networking group.
Siobhán Hamilton has over 15 years business experience in Ireland and the United States working with multinationals, SMEs and start-up organisations. Her focus is in the areas of sustainability in the workplace, project management and communications.
Siobhán’s experience includes projects with leading organisations such as Teradyne Inc., the National Transport Authority and the Smurfit Group. She facilitates roundtable sessions with leading organisations where participants discuss their key sustainability initiatives and challenges and share best practices.
Siobhán co-founded Sustainability Professionals Ireland (SPI) in 2012, a forum for professionals working in the area of sustainability where members can network and learn from experts and colleagues in the field.
Siobhán holds an MBA from the Sawyer Business School at Suffolk University in Boston. She is also a graduate of the Marketing Institute of Ireland.
Sinead Flavin has significant experience in implementing and supporting Smart Travel Planning initiatives in Ireland and internationally. From 2004 until 2008, Sinead was programme manager of Transport for London’s Personalised Travel Planning (PTP) programme which delivered PTP to 250,000 homes across London. Sinead was also a member of UK Department for Transport’s ‘Making Personalised Travel Planning Work’ National Guidance steering group, and gained extensive experience across all areas of Smarter Travel Planning.
Supporting more active and sustianble travel has been the backbone of Sinead’s career, a few highlights inlcude:
- the development and delivery of CTC UK’s CycleSafe national Campaign to promote more and safer cycling;
- providing Active Travel Consultancy services in Sydney for both the Nature Conservation Council and Sydney Area Health; and
- back in Ireland in 2008/2009, as a Principal Consultant for MVA, project managing the Galway City Public Transport Feasibility Study, which examined the case for a proposed light rail scheme.
More recently (2010) she undertook an MBA at Smurfit Business School, and since late 2012, Sinead has played a key role in establishment of a new Dublin based transport consultancy firm Transport Insights.
Sharon has worked on the Smarter Travel Workplaces & Campus programme for the last 5 years. Sharon currently works predominantly with the third level campuses. Active travel is of particular interest to Sharon.
Sharon previously worked as Workplace Health Promotion Officer for the Irish Heart Foundation & Health Promotion Advisor for the Irish Cancer Society. In these roles Sharon was responsible for encouraging and supporting individuals to choose healthier behaviours. Sharon was project manager for the ‘I Love Good Food’ cookbook. Sharon also worked on a number of behaviour change programmes in Australia, including a quit smoking programme for Aboriginal communities, while working for The University of Sydney. Sharon previously held the role as Marketing Executive in Bord Gáis Éireann.
Sharon holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Promotion from National University of Ireland, Galway, an MBS in Marketing Management & a Bachelor of Commerce from University College Dublin. Sharon continually engages in on-going professional development, in recent years this has included a CPD in Travel Planning from the Open University, a Diploma in Management Practice from the Irish Management Institute, a Diploma in Exercise, Health Studies and Personal Training from the National Training Centre and a FETAC Level 6 Train the Trainer qualification.
Garret is the most recent addition to the Smarter Travel Team. A qualified civil engineer from University College Dublin, Garret has a range of experience as a Transport Planner. His areas of expertise include data analysis, research, travel planning, traffic engineer design and site supervision and management. He has provided support to a wide range of organisations including schools, universities, retailers, developers, construction contractors and national government agencies.
Some of Garret’s recent travel planning experience includes being a key member of a consultancy team updating the Travel Plan for NUI Galway, leading analysis of a comprehensive set of travel, traffic and parking surveys; and best practice research into potential Action Plan components.
Garret previously worked as a Civil Site Engineer in Australia from 2011 to 2013, has a strong interest in the development and implementation of active and sustainable travel, and is an active member of Engineers Without Borders Ireland.
