A Smarter Travel Workplace will also benefit you financially. You’d be surprised how much money you can save by taking public transport, car pooling, walking or cycling.

The AA says that the standing costs of owning a 1200cc-1500cc car (insurance, car licence, depreciation, NCT etc) is €4,500 per year. Adding in the wear and tear (9.8c per kilometre) and the petrol costs (19c per kilometre assuming average urban cycle), the cost of driving in an urban environment comes to 62c per kilometre.

The cost of making a 10km car trip each way to work adds up to an astonishing €3,000 each year (excluding any parking costs). That’s an awful lot of bus fares. Compare that with a spend of €4 a day on public transport - this would still only work out at €980 per year, or even less with Taxsaver Commuter Tickets (see below). And you can save even more by walking or cycling.

If the car is your only real option, why not think about starting a car pool with some of your workmates or neighbours? Even participating in a 2 person car pool with just one other person could cut your commuting costs by 50%!

If you are aged 66 or over and you permanently live in the state, the Free Travel Scheme allows you to travel for free on rail, Luas, Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann public transport services as well as a large number of bus services offered by private operators. Certain people with an incapacity under age 66 may also travel for free.
