Leaving your car at home and taking an alternative transport option such as public transport, car pooling, walking or cycling is of significant benefit to the environment.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the threat to air quality is greatest in larger urban areas, such as Dublin, which experience traffic congestion on a regular basis. EPA monitoring results show that city centre sites impacted most by traffic, experience the highest levels of measured pollutants such as PM10 and nitrogen dioxide in Ireland.

A Smarter Travel Workplace will also help reduce your carbon footprint. In an urban environment an average car will emit 2.5kg CO2 for a 10 kilometre journey (emissions will be somewhat less under average driving conditions outside urban areas), But even the most environmentally friendly cars around – electric/petrol hybrids – will still produce about 1 kg per 10 kilometres driven under average driving conditions.

This means that a person driving 10 kilometres to work each day in a fairly small car in Dublin is probably producing about 5 kilos of CO2 per day – that’s 25 kilos per working week or over a tonne a year.

You can make a contribution to improving the environment and reducing your carbon footprint very easily by car-pooling or taking public transport, and totally eliminate it by walking or cycling.

By taking the step you are not just saving time and money, you’re saving the environment as well.
