What is the 10 Minute Cycle Challenge?
The 10 minute Cycle Challenge is a fun, free team event where every 10 minute+ trip taken by bike between the 1st and 22nd of June 2011 puts your team in with a chance to win some fantastic prizes! The Challenge is part of the Smarter Travel Workplaces programme for large employers promoting more sustainable travel.
When does the Challenge start/end?
The Challenge starts on the morning of Wednesday 1st of June and ends on the evening of Wednesday 22nd of June 2011.
How do I take part?

What Journeys are included in this challenge?
Quite simply, 1 trip = 1 point!
Trips must be 10+ minutes to qualify. Longer trips still qualify for 1 point.
Note that:
- Cycling on an exercise bike is not included
- Trips cycled on a fleet bike or an electric bike are included
- Every time you log a trip to or from work, we'll give you an extra point!
Can We Earn Bonus Points?
Every time you log a trip to or from work, the Journey Logger will give you a bonus point for your efforts.
Also this year, all ‘new cyclists’ logging more than 30 trips will get a bonus 10 points for their team (awarded at the end of the challenge).
Why Don’t I Log Distance Travelled?
Distances aren’t logged as we want to make the competition open to as many new and occasional cyclists as possible. If the competition was based solely on distance, club cyclists doing one long cycle at the weekend would leave everyone else in the dust!
By making 1 trip = 1 point, the efforts of someone who hasn’t cycled for years are appreciated as much as someone who cycles the Wicklow mountains every weekend.
If you’d like to keep a note of KMs cycled, you can download an Excel spreadsheet to keep a record:

The number of people in my team has changed since we started the challenge. Do I need to tell anyone?
Yes – please contact cyclechallenge@bikeweek.ie with the details of your team name and changes. If a new member is being added to your team, they will need to register for the challenge in the usual way, or change their Team Name details under the ‘Edit my Details’ tab of the Journey Logger. If a team member is dropping out, please let us know as soon as possible.
How is the overall prize winning team decided?
The overall prize winning team will be chosen at random from the Top Ten teams.

Where can I view results?
You can see your own progress when you log into your Journey Logger calendar – there is a panel at the bottom right of the screen showing points earned, fuel/CO2 saved, kilometres travelled and calories burned.
Your team’s progress will be shown on an overall Leader Board.
Prizes
Prizes are kindly sponsored by Trek (Centro).
I don’t have a bike – can I take part?
You can use a Dublin bike, a company fleet bike or borrow one from a friend to clock up a few trips.
I’m having technical issues with the website, who do I contact?
Contact cyclechallenge@smartertravelworkplaces.ie with the details of your issue. Note that you can edit your journey or personal details in ‘Edit my Details’ tab once you are logged into Journey Logger. You can also delete your account in this section.
We don’t have a non-cyclist on our team
To qualify for prizes, you must have one person who has not cycled in the past six months on your team. If you can’t find a non-cyclist, please contact your company coordinator, as they may be able to match you up with someone. If you don’t know who your company coordinator is, please contact cyclechallenge@smartertravelworkplaces.ie

I can’t see our Workplace when I go to register
Check to see if your organisation is involved in the Cycle Challenge. If your organisation is taking part in the challenge, but you can’t see their name at registration, please contact cyclechallenge@smartertravelworkplaces.ie.
My organisation hasn’t signed up to participate – how can I get involved?
We would love to offer everyone the chance to participate, however our remit is to work with large employers who have signed up to implement workplace travel plans – these are plans to promote sustainable transport for commuting and businesses travel.
If you work for a large organisation and are interested in becoming a Partner of the Smarter Travel Workplaces programme, please contact info@smartertravelworkplaces.ie.
Calculation Assumptions
How are the CO2/fuel/km savings worked out?
Savings are based on an average 3km cycled per 10 minutes.
What data is used for the fuel and carbon emissions calculations?
Data on car fuel efficiency and Carbon emissions is taken from the most up to date statistics from the UK Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA). The cost of petrol and diesel is updated monthly from the AA website.
How do you calculate the calories burned?
Calculations are based on burn rates of: 2.45 kCalories per km per stone for a cyclist travelling at 18 km/hr. 5.14 kCalories per km per stone for a pedestrian walking at 5 km/hr.
How are the overall statistics calculated?
These statistics relate to the number of drive alone car journeys that were substituted by walking, cycling, public transport or car sharing by all members, public and company registrations. Due to the complexity of calculating the carbon and fuel costs of individual public transport or car sharing trips, these have been excluded.
How do you calculate the chocolate bar index?
An average 50g bar of chocolate (like a Dairy Milk, Mars etc.) is approx 250kCalories.
